MCIEA 2017 Winners

KUALA LUMPUR: Achievements of 26 construction players, including some well-known giants, were recognised at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2017 which was held on 15 September, 2017 at KL Hilton.

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia-organised annual awards – now in its 17th instalment – saw Ahmad Zaki Resources Berhad emerge as the biggest winner, taking home three out of the 26 awards for the night, including the prestigious ‘Builder of the Year Award’.

The other big winners included Dato’ Ir. Dr. Gue See Sew, CEO of G&P Professionals Group, who was awarded the ‘CEO of the Year Award’; Dato’ Nur Haizi Abdul Hai of TRC Synergy Berhad who took home the ‘Construction Leading Lady Award’ and Datuk Azlan Abdul Karim, CEO of Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, who received the ‘Prominent Player Award’.

MCIEA recognises individuals, organisations and projects that have contributed and demonstrated excellence in enhancing the image, performance and improvement of the construction industry.

This year’s ceremony was graced by Minister of Works Dato’ Sri Fadillah Haji Yusof. Also present were Deputy Minister of Works Datuk Rosnah Binti Haji Abdul Rashid Shirlin; secretary-general of the ministry Dato’ Sri Zohari Akob; CIDB Malaysia Chairman Tan Sri Dr. Ir. Ahmad Tajuddin Ali and CIDB Chief Executive Dato’ Ir. Ahmad ‘Asri Abdul Hamid.

In his speech, Ahmad ‘Asri said CIDB Malaysia, through the MCIEA, wanted to acknowledge the contributions of industry players who have stepped up their game and who now led the industry by example through their excellence in construction

“CIDB Malaysia strongly encourages the sector to undertake real and meaningful transformation and remain as the backbone of Malaysia’s socio-economic growth,” he said.

The award winners at MCIEA 2017 were selected by a panel of judges which included Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Ir. Jamilus Hussein (KLIA Premier Holding Sdn Bhd), Dato’ Ir. Mohtar Musri (Department of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia), Datuk Awang Buhtaman Awang Mahmun (Sedafiat Sdn Bhd), Dato’ Sri Kandan Kanagainthiram (KPK Quantity Surveyors (Semenanjung) Sdn Bhd), Datuk Ir. Rosaline Ganendra (Minconsult Sdn Bhd), Tuan Hj. Ir. Alhadi Ibrahim (Konsortium Malaysia), and Ir. Prem Kumar (Association of Consulting Engineering).

Outstanding individuals

Prominent Player Award winner Datuk Azlan Abdul Karim gave credit to team work at Putrajaya Holdings for his success.

“Fusing a group of talents from different disciplines and cultures into an effective organisation working towards a single vision, that’s where the challenge is,” he said.

“It’s the men and women at Putrajaya Holdings who created the city around us. It was a new company – with people from consulting, property and infrastructure backgrounds and more – and they remain my proudest achievement.”

The Prominent Player Award is to recognise the individual who best represents the qualities and attributes of a prominent construction industry player who has contributed significantly to the industry’s development.

As for the CEO of the Year Award winner, G&P Professionals Sdn Bhd CEO Dato’ Gue See Sew, the time was now ripe for his company’s expansion to regional markets, especially so after a recent invitation to Myanmar by the Myanmar Engineering Society.

“We’re now looking to recruit five or six local engineers who will follow us back to Malaysia to learn our systems before returning to their homeland as full-fledged G&P representatives,” he said.

The CEO of the Year Award is given to the individual who has successfully steered, managed, directed and moulded the company to greater heights and contributed significantly to the development of Malaysia’s construction industry.

Recipient of the Construction Leading Lady Award, Dato’ Nur Haizi Abdul Hai meanwhile was quick to point out that Malaysia has made significant progress in increasing the number of women in the workforce and decision-making roles as well as their economic contributions.

“Inequalities should no longer be a topic of discussion. In fact, we have seen women performing equally well, if not better, than their male counterparts in all levels of education,” she said, adding that her passion for architecture was ignited when she was just a 15-year-old schoolgirl at Methodist Girls’ School in Kuala Lumpur.

The Construction Leading Lady Award is to recognise an individual woman who best represents the qualities and attributes of a prominent construction industry player and who has contributed significantly to the development of the Malaysian construction industry.
